Weed Control
Our current guidance concerning weeds at LOK:
-
Filamentous
Algae (slimy green stuff along the shoreline) - Rake it
out, let it dry (gets real light), throw it away.
-
American
Pondweed (long leaves floating on top) - Pick up any
pieces floating around or washing up on your shoreline. Contact a
Lake Committee member if there is a patch growing so we can
chemically treat it.
-
Naiad
(thin, tangly weed that wraps around your arms and legs if you walk
through it. May also have quarter-size, round leaves that float on
top.) - We expect the grass carp to control this weed.
Alternatively, you can rake this out.
-
Cattails
- If in water, cut off below water level or pull it out.
Alternatively, spray with Weedtrine D.
Be cautious about bringing any weed into
the lake after having your boat and trailer in another lake or river,
especially if there is hydrilla or pondweed.
History:
We tried a variety of weed killers for
various weed types:
* For Algae: Cutrine Plus (works well), and Copper Sulfate (may not be
approved much longer)
* For American Pondweed: Aquathol K
* For Cattails: Weedtrine D
* For Naiad: Chemical treatment for Naiad is extremely costly (thousands
of dollars), so was not attempted.
We then found an excellent weed killer that worked great on our American
Pondweed (very difficult to control).
In the spring of 2008 we successfully killed off all patches of American
Pondweed with Aquathol in one treatment. This was the weed that was
growing in a large patch by the boat ramp and then spread to the south
tunnel and into the North Lake.
Shortly thereafter in the spring of 2008, we added 80 sterile triploid
grass carp (see info in the grass carp button). This was primarily aimed
at controlling the Naiad weed that was thick in the South Lake in the
summer of 2007. Since the addition of grass carp in 2008, Naiad has been
very much under control.
